Privacy Policy for Split View Plus
Effective Date: October 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how data is handled when you use Split View Plus (the "Extension"), an extension for Chrome's built-in Split View.
What the Extension Works With
The Extension works with the tabs in your browser window: which tabs are side by side in a split, which side is active, and whether a tab is muted or zoomed. It uses this information on your device to carry out the actions you choose, such as reloading or swapping the two sides.
When you use these features, the Extension may also handle:
- the address of the page you're on, when you choose "Split with a copy of this page" or open a link in the other pane, so the page can be opened there;
- the text you selected, when you choose "Look up … in split": the text is sent to the search site you picked in Settings (Google by default), as a search on that site, and opened in the other pane;
- the name and colour you give a pair, which Chrome stores as a tab group;
- scroll positions, when you turn on sync scrolling: a small script on each of the two pages reports how far you've scrolled, and the Extension scrolls the other page to match. The positions go only between the two pages, inside your browser.
None of this is sent to us.
Storage
- Your settings (auto-zoom level, audio follows focus, sync scrolling mode, the "Look up in split" site) are kept in Chrome's synced extension storage, so they follow your Chrome profile if you use Chrome sync.
- Working state (which tabs the Extension zoomed or muted, your recently used tabs, which pairs are syncing) is kept in memory and cleared when the browser closes.
Analytics and Error Diagnostics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which features are used and to find problems. The Extension sends:
- which feature was used, how it was started (toolbar button, keyboard shortcut or menu) and its outcome (for example, "done" or "not in a split");
- settings changes, with the "Look up in split" site given only as a preset name (such as "bing") or "custom";
- installs and updates, and the extension version;
- whether sync scrolling was allowed on a site, without naming the site, and when a page can't be synced, only its kind ("PDF", "Chrome Web Store", "restricted");
- technical error diagnostics: the feature, the error type, and the error message reduced to plain words and numbers: quoted text, web addresses, host names, IP addresses, file paths and email addresses are removed, and nothing after a web address or file path is kept;
- your browser, its language, the month you installed the Extension, whether its toolbar button is pinned, and your auto-zoom and audio settings;
- random identifiers created by the Extension, so usage can be counted without knowing who you are.
We do not send page addresses, page titles, page content, the text you select or look up, pair names, or your browsing history.
Analytics data is kept for 14 months. Learn more about Google's data practices in Google's Privacy Policy.
Permissions
The Extension asks for:
- context menus, for its right-click menus;
- storage, for your settings;
- active tab and scripting, to act on the tab you're using when you click the Extension, for example to open a copy of the page.
It asks for these only when you use the feature that needs them:
- tab groups, the first time you name a pair;
- access to a site, the first time you turn on sync scrolling on that site. You can remove site access at any time from Chrome's extensions menu.
It doesn't ask to read your browsing history or to access all websites.
Sharing with Third Parties
We do not sell your data. The only third parties involved are:
- Google Analytics, for the anonymous usage and error data described above;
- the search site you choose for "Look up in split", which receives the text you look up, as any search you make there would.
Your Control
You can change every setting in the Extension's Settings page. Turning off sync scrolling stops it on both pages, and removing the Extension deletes its settings and its stored identifiers.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect product changes or clarify our practices. When we do, we will update the Effective Date above.
