Privacy Policy for Note-it Aside: Sticky Notes in Side Panel
Effective Date: 29 Mar 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how data is handled when you use Note-it Aside: Sticky Notes in Side Panel (the "Extension").
Local-First Storage
By default, your notes, tasks, folders, and most settings are stored locally in your browser on your device.
The Extension may also locally process page data when you explicitly use page-capture or page-summary features. Depending on the feature you choose, that local processing may include:
- selected text
- readable page text
- page URL, hostname, and title
- page language and a short local preview snippet
This data does not leave your device unless you explicitly use a feature that requires remote transmission, such as Cloud Backup, Share Folder, or Instant Transmit.
Analytics and Error Diagnostics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand product usage and improve reliability.
This may include non-content metadata such as:
- feature usage events
- extension version
- browser or UI language
- broad product state and usage ranges
- pseudonymous extension-generated analytics identifiers
- technical error and exception diagnostics, such as feature or operation name, runtime surface, request host or path, HTTP status codes, error messages, and shortened stack traces
We do not intentionally send note text, note titles, folder names, imported file contents, shared-folder contents, Instant Transmit message text, full browsing history, full URLs with query parameters, or cloud authentication tokens in analytics or error reports.

Cloud Backup (Optional)
Note-it Aside offers an optional Cloud Backup feature that lets you sync notes and folders to a cloud storage provider you choose. This feature is off by default and activates only when you explicitly connect a provider.
- Supported providers: Google Drive and Dropbox
- What is transmitted: your notes, folders, and backup metadata needed to restore your data
- Authentication: OAuth is used to connect your chosen provider; authentication information and access tokens are stored locally on your device to keep the backup connection working
- Where the data is stored: in your own cloud account with that provider
- Disconnecting: you can disconnect Cloud Backup at any time; any data already stored in your cloud account remains under your control
Provider policies:
When you use Google Drive backup, information received from Google APIs is used only to provide that optional backup feature.
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Share Folder (Optional)
Version 1.5 introduces an optional Share Folder feature.
When you explicitly choose to share a folder and confirm consent, the selected folder's shared data is uploaded to our sharing service so a public link can be generated. This may include:
- folder name and ordering metadata
- the notes and tasks in that shared folder
- note fields needed to render the shared page, such as text, title, URLs, timestamps, ordering, and note styling/task status
Important details:
- sharing is off by default
- only the folder you choose to share is uploaded
- anyone with the share link can view the shared content
- the shared data remains available until you revoke sharing
- revoking sharing removes the shared data from our sharing service
If someone opens a shared-folder link while the Extension is installed, the share page can detect the Extension and, if the user explicitly confirms, send that shared folder data into the Extension for import.
Import, Export, and Instant Transmit
The import and export features run locally on your device. Import and export file contents are not uploaded to our servers as part of those actions.
The "Instant Transmit" feature temporarily relays text between your browser extension and another device through our server for delivery. That message data is intended to be transmitted only for the active session and is not stored as a note unless you explicitly save or convert it yourself.
Website Content and Browsing Activity
When you explicitly use note capture, selected-text capture, or page-summary features, the Extension may access and process website content and related browsing data such as:
- selected text or readable page text
- page URL, domain, and title
- page language
These flows are user-initiated. This website content and browsing data is processed locally for the requested feature and is not sent to our analytics systems as content. If you later choose to save, share, back up, export, or transmit that content, it will be handled according to the corresponding feature section in this policy.
Permissions
The extension requests permissions that are necessary for its features, including permissions for storage, side panel access, context menus, active tab or scripting actions, and optional identity-based cloud backup authentication.
These permissions are used only to provide extension functionality and are not used to sell your data.
Sharing with Third Parties
We do not sell your personal data.
Your data may be processed by third-party services only as needed to provide features you choose to use, for example:
- Google Analytics for anonymous product analytics and diagnostics
- Google Drive or Dropbox when you enable Cloud Backup
- our hosting or infrastructure providers that operate the Share Folder and Instant Transmit services
When you use Share Folder, the content you choose to share is made available to anyone who has the generated link.
Data Security
We use HTTPS for network transmission where remote features are involved. Local data is protected by the security of your device and browser profile. Data stored through Cloud Backup is subject to the security measures of your chosen cloud provider.
Your Control
You can edit, delete, archive, export, import, share, unshare, back up, or disconnect backup features at any time from the Extension. Notes moved to trash are automatically deleted after 30 days.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect product changes or clarify our practices. When we do, we will update the Effective Date above.
