Data Collection and Usage

Local Data Storage: By default, all notes and settings are stored locally on your device. Your data never leaves your browser or computer unless you explicitly enable Cloud Backup (see below).
Analytics: The extension collects anonymous usage analytics via Google Analytics 4 to help us understand how features are used and improve the product. This includes aggregated, non-personally-identifiable data such as feature usage counts, extension version, browser language, and bucketed usage ranges (e.g. "1-5 notes" rather than exact counts). No note content, personal information, or browsing activity is collected. You can learn more about how Google processes this data in Google's Privacy Policy.

Cloud Backup (Optional)

Note-it Aside offers an optional Cloud Backup feature that allows you to sync your notes to a third-party cloud storage provider of your choice. This feature is disabled by default and only activates when you explicitly connect a provider.

Supported providers: Google Drive and Dropbox.
What is transmitted: When enabled, your notes and folder data are uploaded to your chosen provider's storage.
Authentication: The extension uses OAuth to authenticate with your cloud provider. Access tokens are stored locally on your device.
Third-party access: Your synced data is stored in your own cloud storage account and is subject to that provider's privacy policy:
- Google Privacy Policy
- Dropbox Privacy Policy
Disconnecting: You can disconnect Cloud Backup at any time from the extension. After disconnecting, the extension no longer accesses your cloud storage. Any data already stored in your cloud account remains there under your control.

Data Import, Export, and Real-time Transfer

Note-it Aside allows users to import and export their notes as local files. All import and export actions occur entirely on the user's device — no note data is sent to or stored on our servers.

The "Instant Transfer" feature enables temporary, real-time text transmission between a browser extension and a mobile device through a secure channel. Message data is only relayed through our server in memory for delivery purposes and is not stored or logged in any form after the session ends.

Permissions

The extension requires certain permissions to function:
- Access to the side panel: This is used to display your sticky notes within the Chrome side panel.
- Context menu access: This allows you to select text on a webpage and create notes from it.
These permissions are strictly used to provide the core functionality of the extension and are not used to collect or share your data.

We do not share, sell, or transfer your data to any third parties under any circumstances. When you use Cloud Backup, your data is stored in your own account with the provider you choose — we never have access to it.

Data Security

Your locally stored data is as secure as your device itself. When Cloud Backup is enabled, data in transit is encrypted via HTTPS, and data at rest is protected by your cloud provider's security measures. We encourage you to use secure passwords and maintain your device's security to protect your information.

User Control

You have complete control over your data within the extension. You can edit, delete, or archive notes directly from the side panel. Notes moved to the trash are automatically deleted after 30 days. You can enable or disable Cloud Backup at any time.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally to clarify our practices or reflect any changes in the extension's functionality. If updates are made, the "Effective Date" at the top of this policy will be updated.
