Google PageSpeed Insights Shortcut Privacy Policy

Google PageSpeed Insights Shortcut respects your privacy and is committed to safeguarding user data. The extension opens the current page in Google PageSpeed Insights and lets you save the scores of a report, so you can follow them over time. It does not ask for your name, email address or Google account, it reads no page content other than the scores of the PageSpeed Insights reports you save, and it does not sell or share data for advertising.

Data Collection

When you open a page in PageSpeed Insights from the toolbar button or the right-click menu, the extension opens https://pagespeed.web.dev/ in a new tab with that page's address, so PageSpeed Insights can test it. That address is handled by PageSpeed Insights under Google's privacy policy.

When you click Save this report on a PageSpeed Insights report, the extension reads the scores and metrics shown in the report, for mobile and desktop, together with the address of the tested page. It stores them in Chrome storage on your device to show your history, chart and table in the side panel. Your saved history stays in your browser and is never uploaded. You can delete a saved run from the side panel, and removing the extension deletes the history.

The extension also uses limited usage analytics (Google Analytics) to understand how it is used:

  • extension installs
  • which button was used: the toolbar button, the right-click menu, or Save this report
  • side panel views.

Each analytics event includes the extension's version and two random identifiers that the extension creates. They are not your name, email address or Google account, but they are persistent, so events can be linked to each other over time:

  • an install identifier, stored in Chrome storage on this device
  • a user identifier, stored in Chrome's synced storage. If Chrome Sync is on, it is the same on all your computers signed in to the same Chrome profile, so events from those computers can be linked to each other.

These analytics never include the addresses of the pages you test or visit, your saved scores, or any page content. Removing the extension deletes the install identifier and stops the analytics.

Permissions

The extension uses the following Chrome permissions:

  • activeTab to read the address of the current tab when you click the toolbar button or the menu item
  • contextMenus to add the right-click menu item "Open in PageSpeed Insights"
  • sidePanel to show your saved history in Chrome's side panel
  • storage to save your history on your device, and the analytics identifiers described above.

It also adds the Save this report button to PageSpeed Insights report pages (https://pagespeed.web.dev/) and runs on no other site.
